Doring's oath ceremony and session participation

When the 44 elected members gathered for the secret meeting on 4th October, the only member conspicuous of absence was member for Australiasia, Tenzin Doring, who was in flight en-route to India. Doring was exempted under exceptional circumstances at the eleventh hour by Australian government as the most important meeting and oath ceremony awaited his presence at Dharamsala. Radio Free Asia quoted Doring’s absence for the two-day meet and even questioned on the futility of his branding the certain arrival as post-verdict, while not quoting the sacrifice he made in attending the session under exceptionally difficult and unavoidable circumstances of quarantine requirement and return uncertainty.

Notwithstanding, the 36-year-old managed to take oath on the 8th October from the Pro Tem speaker along with other 43 elected members to the 17th Tibetan Parliament in Exile. Some marked his arrival as bearer of good news as the oath taking ceremony soon followed, whose absence in the June meet turned blessing in disguise where members failed to come to consensus. During the two day first session of the parliament, he participated three times in the discussion including voicing support for the amendment to the Article 63 (C) of Tibetan Charter, though failing to secure 2/3 majority to pass through.

Though Doring initially hinted at not being able to attend the session due to travel exemption imposition from resident country, he finally managed struggling through separation with family for over one and half months in the backdrop of quarantine requirement.

Doring, who represents Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan, Japan, Russo and other Asian countries exclusive of Indian subcontinent was the only member who had attended the session under tight and restricted circumstance of uncertainty on his return to Australia. After nearly one and half months in India, Doring is likely to arrive home in late November or early December after subjecting to official quarantine requirement for arrivals from India.

Doring plans to meet several Australian leaders as an MP for the electorate to push for greater role of the Australian leadership on Tibet issue and closely work with Drew Pavlau’s party pending registration. Doring also plans to hold onsite or online meeting with leaders of the Tibetan communities in his electorate to understand situation and formulate future course of action for Tibetan activism. During election he promised to work on the three areas of unity, movement, and reformation.
